Ethical Communication
Put students in groups and have them discuss the following questions, Have each group present to the class which question was the most difficult. Great springboard for discussion.
1a. What constitutes ethical communication?
1b. What constitutes unethical communication?
2a. Is it ever ethical to lie?
2b. Is it ethical to tell a "white lie" to spare the feelings of a friend?
3. Is it ethical to tell a lie if someone else gave you permission to? The phone rings, you pick it up, and your dad tells you, "If it’s for me, tell them I’m not home." You boss instructs you , "Tell the customer it’s been back ordered" when in reality, he forgot to order the part.
4. Is it ethical for a salesperson to tell you the price is $500 when s/he knows that they can sell it to you for $430.
5. Is it ethical to use racial, ethnic, or religious slurs when a member of the insulted group is not present?
6. Sam meets an old friend and says," I’ll have you over for dinner sometime." As happens so often, Sam does not really intend to invite the friend over. Are these phrases such as "I’ll call you" (at the end of a relationship) and "We’ll do lunch" ethical?
7. To what degree is the use of sexist language unethical? "girl" "chick" "gal" "humankind" vs "mankind," "salesperson" vs "salesman"
8. When does the public’s right to know go too far in violating an individual’s right to privacy? For example, is it our right to know that Magic Johnson has AIDS, Kathy Lee Gifford’s husband had an affair, and what the President did with Monica?
9. Is it ethical to conduct an experiment on someone without their full knowledge and consent of the experiment?
10. Is it ethical for advertisers to use know persuasive sales tactics on an unsuspecting public?
11.Is is morally correct to advertise to young children? For example, is it ethical to use cartoons to promote a product or to target children who are too young to understand that they are being targeted?
12. Is it ethical for presidential candidates to make exaggerated promises to get elected?
13. Is a communicator unethical when utilizing ghostwriting? Can a speaker ethically use another to write their speech and then present it as his or her own? (Nixon, Kennedy, F.D. Roosevelt)
